Modeling complex technical systems is highly desirable but very challenging. Many modeling techniques have been developed and used in related scientific disciplines, such as Artificial Intelligence, Risk Analysis, Reliability Engineering and Cognitive Sciences. Each of these techniques is dedicated to a specific aspect of complex systems, and most utilize a structural/behavioral modeling approach to describe the system. However, some of these techniques are based on the relatively new approach of Functional Modeling. In order to clarify whether these techniques provide a complete representation of the knowledge-base of these systems, a full exploration of the potential of Functional Modeling is needed. Functional Modeling has a high potential to represent the "World-Model" and be used as the "Behavior Generator" for intelligent system modeling.

The objective of this workshop series is to provide an opportunity to present and discuss various methods of functional modeling for complex technical systems. The workshop brings together the world's leading experts in the area of functional modeling from diverse engineering fields (Artificial Intelligence, Risk and Reliability, Safety Critical Computing Systems, Control Engineering and Cognitive Science) to present and discuss:

Participants are encouraged to present a paper and participate in the subsequent workshop discussions. The papers will be reviewed and published in a bounded volume which will be ready shortly after the workshop. Selected papers will be presented at a special issue of Reliability Engineering and Systems Safety Journal dedicated to Functional Modeling.

Location of the workshop: The workshop will take place at the R & D Center of Electricitè de France in Clamart, located 5 kilometer south of Paris. There will be a visit to Universite of Technologie de Troyes (2 hours from Paris) on July 3 and some of the technical presentations will take place at the University. Transportation will be provided by the Workshop organizers. There would be a registration fee of $250/person, which includes a bounded copy of the proceeding, handouts, lunch, refreshments, and transportation. Information on accommodation is Paris, or vicinity will be provided upon request.
