OBJECTIVES

To estabilish a common understanding of environmental risk assessment and to explore ways to provide comprehensive information for risk managers, policymakers and regulators.
The concept of "risk" has not been generally accepted in the environmental research community. By effectively using the Probabilistic Risk Asseddment(PRA), the methodologies are to be developed and applied in the environmental areas.
discussions will be held in three parallel working groups to focus on the following topics:
(A) Establishment of research directions and needs
- Discuss the international development.
- Develop methods for hazard identification.
- Discuss the approaches of safety factors, and mathematical models.
- Develop models for assessing environmental and human exposure to hazardous substances.
- Propose new approaches in risk characterization methods, assessment, and management.
(B) Application to environmental policies
- Emphasize the need for more systematic and quantitative assessment for policy making.
- Compare the environmental policies in different countries.
- Prioritize the issues in risk analysis.
- Explore ways to use the knowledge gained for the risk analysis in formulating environment policies.
- Discuss possibility of adopting international regulatory policy.
(C) Construction of database
- Present case studies and applications.
- Collect data relevant to environmental research and policy making.
